Two records braked up this season of Cinereous Vulture nesting performance in Bulgaria. First time three chicks have hatched in the country from the new history of the species following the reintroduction start in 2018.
The establishment phase is going smoothly after the first single chick fledged in 2021 in Eastern Balkan (Kotlenska Planina SPA) and another in 2022 in Western Balkan (Ponor SPA). So now we have a new regional record in Eastern Balkan, as two chicks first time hatched by two pairs in a year, but this is also a national record. In addition, in Western Balkan, we have once again a single chick, but a second pair is incubating with a month delay, and there is still a chance for a record-breaking there too.
Altogether, 11-13 pairs are formed so far in both release sites/colonies in Balkan Mountains, and in the following years, more will mature, so we expect an increase in the reproduction of the species.
The map shows the tree species where Cinereous vultures are nesting in the Balkans.
