The new breeding season of the Griffon vultures in Balkan Mountain and Kresna Gorge has started

The first egg of the year was laid in the colony of Griffon Vultures in Kresna Gorge on 29.01.2016. Five more pairs prepair their nests and express mating behavior. For more information please visit the web site of LIFE11/NAT/BG/363 LIFE for Kresna Gorge.

After severe cold and heavy snow, Luchezar Bonchev of FWFF Kotel team has finally managed to reach the areas of Terzievi porti and Urushki skali – the favourite roosting sites of the Griffon Vultures, released in the Eastern Balkan Mountains.

To our greatest pleasure, at least three breeding pairs were confirmed. The most experienced vultures – 7G and B18 have occupied their nest from last year. The young pair K1U and K2N have liked a brand new nest in a niche, specially reconstructed by the alpinists of FWFF last year. This family has most probably laid between February 2nd and 3d as the male is currently sitting tight. The third pair – K5R and K0H is preparing a nest in a fairly good niche, also reconstructed last autumn.

Several other adult birds are regularly seen at the supplementary feeding sites maintained within the Bright Future for Black Vulture LIFE14 NAT/BG/649 Project. We therefore suspect that there might be some more nesting pairs we just haven’t been able to locate yet.

We are eagerly expecting the response of the birds in Vrachanski Balkan, which successfully raised their very first young last year – Michel.

We are keeping fingers crossed for “our” vultures, hoping to see even more vulture babies raised in Bulgaria.
