Territorial pairs in the new Cinereous vulture colonies in Bulgaria in 2023

More formed pairs of black vultures in 2023, compared to 2022, report the project teams in Eastern Stara Planina and Vrachanski Balkan. There is also a great dynamic in the exchange of birds between the two colonies.

Eastern Stara Planina

There are already 3 (three) incubating pairs. But unfortunately, there is reluctance in one pair caused by disturbance related to logging in the area. Although, it was agreed to stop forestry activities during the nesting period. Additionally, 4 (four) pairs occupied territory,  sitting together and preparing their nests.

Vrachanski Balkan

There are already 2 (two) incubating pairs. For some reason, as yet undetermined, we observed a third pair of adult birds formed from the previous year, which failed to lay an egg.

Another 4 (four) pairs in the area have been formed, for which we expect nesting soon.

More information about the newly reintroduced black vulture colonies can be read here.
