The good news about the Cinereous Vulture in Bulgaria in 2021 continues. Last weekend our team discovered a new nest of a Cinereous Vulture. This time in the Special protected area of “Ponor” in Western Balkan in Bulgaria. The birds that built the nest are among those released under the “Vultures Back to LIFE” project – one released in the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park and the other in the Sinite kamani Nature Park. The birds have not yet nested in the newly built nest, which was apparently built in the summer and autumn of 2021, but is a clear sign that the birds are preparing to nest there in the new 2022 season. The nest is built in a sylver pine and is the first to meet the latest top preferences of the species. We remind you that the other nests discovered in 2021 in the Eastern Balkans Mtns are 2 in oaks and one on the ground. Thus, the total number of Cinereous Vultures nests discovered in Bulgaria in 2021 becomes 4. This is the first Cinereous Vulture’s nest for Ponor SPA ever reported so far, although the Red Data Book (1985) of Bulgaria indicates observations of the species in the area until 1960.
